Day 54 Home 54 - To give or not to give?

We last gave her a sub-cut of 150ml last Fri, 1 Aug, early morning. Since then, we have not given her any and it has been 5 full days. She is still quite hydrated and at no point in time was she dehydrated. Perhaps 1 - 3% at times but she will make up for it later by drinking.

The vet mentioned that no sub-cut is necessary as long as she is hydrated.

Should we then give her another sub-cut of 150ml tonight even though she does not seem to need it?

How do you tell when she's hydrated or not?
You've all done marvellous work with Xin Xin. Cheers!

ps: in case you're thinking of me ;), I can tell you most community cats I know refuse to eat SC k/d formula (which I had some previously). Some are even rejecting the z/d(?) formula which you'd passed to me. They just pick out the RC kibbles...very smart. Haha!

When the cat settles down, pinch the skin just below the neck and let go. The skin of a well hydrated cat will snap back immediately while it will go down very slowly for a dehydrated one. Pinch there and move further down the spine for an average.

Skins of thin cats usually take longer time to come down compared to those of fat cats.

If she looks perky, eats well, back to her normal habits, drinks normal, you may want to stop the subcuts. If she has too much water under skin, her kidneys may be strained from processing. At this point, we don't want to exert too much pressure to the kidneys.

If she's doing ok without the sub-q fluids then it's probably a good idea not to give them as she's drinking normally. Another sign of dehydration is slightly sunken eyes, which in her latest picture look great! Hope xin xin continues to do so well.

I gave her 100ml that night. But on hindsight, should not have as her skin was a bit taut after that. Since then, no more sub-cuts as she is well hydrated. We change the water in the 2 bowls twice a day to encourage more fluid intake.
